They are also extremely flexible, allowing the legato or staccato execution of large intervals while maintaining a richness of tone that gives body and clarity to the sound, which is a hallmark of Vandoren Reeds.  Vandoren V12 Clarinet ReedsV12 reeds are manufactured from cane tubes with the same diameter as cane used for saxophone reeds. Topographical diagram of the Traditional Vandoren reed - the lines connect areas of equal thickness. The more pointed the arch, the thicker the spine and heart of the reed, and conversely, the thinner the side bevels. V12 reeds are thicker at each end.: Thickness at the tip: .10mm (0.004 inch) Thickness at the heel: 3.15mm (0.124 inches, hence the name V12) Comparing strengths, a V12 strength 4 reed is almost equal to Classic strength 3 1/2 reed.
